The letter supplies the biographical information requested by Maximiliam Schele de Vere from members of the Brockenbrough family for his Semi-Centennial Catalogue of University of Virginia students. Brockenbrough briefly describes his career as a District Court judge in Virginia with jurisdiction over all of Virginia west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, his involvement in the Peace Congress of 1861 and in the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States, his appointment as a District judge by the Provisional Congress and his work as Trustee, Rector and Professor at Washington and Lee.
